White River Lake Up 11Ft After Record Rain

By: Dave Walker

“It has to rain basically. That’s the bottom line.” That’s what A.O. Smith, owner of the White River Lake Marina told us in July. And rain it did, more than eight inches in the water shed feeding the lake. As of Tuesday the lake is up a full 11 feet, almost doubling its depth. White River Lake was down to 12 feet before the record rains came.

" We were pretty much down to the locals for our Friday Night Fish Fry's, but within hours of the rain stopping, the lake was buzzing with boats from Lubbock, all coming to check out the new White River Lake. We took hundreds of phone calls the first day asking if the lake was coming back. This has made the years of waiting worth it."

The pre 100 year rain level was so low that the four towns, Ralls, Crosbyton, Spur and Post that draw from the lake for their water supply were prepared to switch to emergency water wells. Smith told us “Keep in mind you can’t drain a lake all the way to zero because at some point the water intake system fails.”

The addition of 11 feet of water could ad years onto the life of the lake which hasn’t seen much rain in its water shed until last week.

“You know, they are continuing to pump water out of it at a rate of probably a million and a half gallons a day,” says A.O. Smith. The Lakes property values and the businesses depend upon the lake. “We have a Friday night fish fry, and a lot of times we have entertainment on the patio. And we’re just hanging on ‘til the lake is full, basically.” The Lake is not exactly full but it is now back up to a level they haven’t seen in years.

He says fortunately property owners have not given up, and not sold their lake houses in desperation. “Property values have basically stayed the same.”

Smith and others are now hoping that boaters and fishermen will comeback and take advantage of a rain they call “a Godsend.”
