| Water Fight At Council Today By: Dave Walker The second reading on doubling your water rates will happen this morning. The only debate left is should there be a break for low income citizens. Last week the City Staff presented the council a draft of an "affordability program," offering a discount of up to $6 a month for certain households living near and below the federal poverty line. But that plan would cost roughly $400,000 in lost revenue. Even though the Council is expected to debate relief for fixed income residents, the Mayor says don’t look for any help. It’s coming down to a matter of survival. “The days of cheap water are over. We have got to raise these rates to secure the future of Lubbock. That’s what I’m interested in.” The proposed water and sewer increase means most customers would pay more than $32 per month. That’s compared the current $14 most pay now. Customers in newer homes would pay more than $49 per month, compared to $20. Councilman Paul R Beane says low income citizens should get some kind of a break. “It’s not right that people on fixed incomes are in effect paying a disproportionate amount for the little water they use compared to the bigger users.” Beane says there will likely be a heated discussion about rates during this mornings council meeting. The rate hike will produce hundreds of millions of dollars to pay for water projects needed to secure and replace the city's drinking supply.
