And, church members rebuilding hope after fire. >>Perry Gets Rousing Prologue From Palin (Cypress, TX) -- A crowd of more than eight-thousand was impassioned yesterday by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin who urged everyone to send a message to the nation's capital by supporting Governor Rick Perry. Confetti and rock music filled the air as Palin bashed Washington without mentioning U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison as Perry's opponent in next month's Republican primary. Ted Nugent played the national anthem before Perry and Palin made their entrance to the music of George Strait. Perry said, quote, "How long will the folks in Washington keep spending money they don't have on solutions they haven't thought through for problems they don't really understand?" >>Financial Crisis Discussed By School Board (Austin, TX) -- Members of the Austin School Board are getting ready to discuss if the district should declare a state of financial emergency and a timeline to deal with low-performing schools. A decision to declare an emergency would allow Superintendent Meria Carstarphen powers to slash dozens of administrative positions, while facing an estimated budget gap of 15-million dollars. The meeting takes place tonight at 6:30 at the Carruth Administration Auditorium, 1111 West Sixth Street. >>New Recycling Contract Could Save Money (Austin, TX) -- Austin City Council members will consider extending a recycling contract with Greenstar, but not everyone thinks the idea is beneficial and could be a bad risk for taxpayers. Austin leaders expected the city to make money with the original agreement, but has actually lost more than two-million dollars. Greenstar officials says the negative effect on the recycling market is a function of the economic decline, and is offering to decrease its fees if the city allows them to collect recyclables until March 2011. Council members will offer their decision to extend the contract at their meeting Thursday night. >>Church Members Rebuilding Hope After Fire (Temple, TX) -- The First Baptist Church in Temple has been reduced to rubble following an arson fire last month with damage estimated at 15-million dollars. Many are angry that someone could burn their church to the ground, and have offered to allow members to meet in their homes. Pastor Martin Knox said he sees a lot of resolve in the congregation who are stepping up to meet the challenge. Other churches have been volunteering space, and members of the burned church do not mind shuttling from place to place with Bibles in hand.
