| Maybe Texas Tech SHOULD Play in Dallas By: James Clark The offer from the Cotton Bowl to Texas Tech just gets sweeter and sweeter. Maybe all us Red Raider fans in Lubbock are wrong about moving a football game to Dallas. A News Radio 1420 exclusive. We speak extensively with the man who is trying to convince Texas Tech and Texas A&M to play their rivalry game in Dallas rather than Lubbock and College Station. His name is Errol McCoy. He is the state fair president. One of his responsibilities is to fill the cotton bowl with high impact football games. Now that the Cotton Bowl game will no longer played in the Cotton Bowl stadium McCoy will renew his efforts to sweet talk Texas Tech. McCoy says the City of Dallas will pay Texas Tech’s travel expenses, and he says the state fair will waive the stadium rental. “So, basically the Universities have zero cost in coming to Dallas to play in a neutral site, with the tremendous upside. And in the case of Texas Tech I think they could improve their overall financial situation for the athletic department by $2 million per year; each year!” No wonder Texas Tech Athletic Director Gerald Myers speaks in favor of moving the big rivalry game. It’s hard to smack a $2 million per year gift horse in the mouth. TV coverage will be better. Texas Tech’s presence in Dallas would go up and how do you put a dollar figure on that? Fans here in Lubbock don’t like it, nor do Lubbock area businesses. But McCoy’s offer to Texas Tech is so impressive, it’s just impossible to ignore. McCoy says, “There’s no better showcase for Red Raider football than to have that in the Metroplex each fall. This is a recruiting hotbed as we know, with over 130 ‘A’ or higher high schools. This past year we had two state champions come out of the Metroplex. Last year there were three state champions. So this is a recruiting hotbed and would allow Tech to take advantage of that recruiting hotbed by playing here.” And if Texas Tech won’t come play in the Cotton Bowl, chances are, somebody else will. McCoy has irons in the fire at Oklahoma, Louisiana State University, and even Notre Dame. Of course the average fan says ‘Yeah but that’s our big rivalry game.’ It doesn’t get any bigger than Red Raider verses Aggies. We can’t give that up! Right? So News Radio 1420 asked Errol McCoy: does it have to be THAT game? What about Tech verses Oklahoma? What about Tech verses ANY other Big 12 team? How about trying to build a brand new rivalry from scratch; say, Texas Tech verses LSU? Here’s McCoy’s answer. “So it can be any combination; I think any combination of those you just mentioned probably would work and work well.” With regard to the Tech verses A&M game, a very well placed source in the Texas Tech athletic department told News Radio 1420 this week that negotiations had fallen off and there really was no new update. But now that we know Texas Tech has several options for playing one game a year in Dallas, maybe now we’ll see movement on that issue.
