Peggy Sue Says Fight For Buddy Holly

By: James Clark

First, News Radio 1420 broke the story. And now we have exclusive reaction with one of the icons of rock and roll history. After today, no more Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock, and after today no more Buddy Holly Terrace.

Threat Of Lawsuit

The city council takes up a request by Civic Lubbock Inc. to change the name because Buddy Holly’s widow is threatening to sue. To be more specific Maria Elena Holly has hired an intellectual property management company called CMG and CMG is threatening to sue. We have reaction this morning from the President of Civic Lubbock Inc., Dan Burns, as well as a brief statement from Maria Elena Holly. We also have reaction from Peggy Sue Gerron. She’s the inspiration for Buddy Holly’s smash hit “Peggy Sue.”

Why Drop Buddy Holly Name?

We start with Civic Lubbock Inc President Dan Burns. Why drop the name? “Civic Lubbock being a non-profit 501c 3, we don’t make any money on our induction ceremony. It is a program we took on to honor some of our native sons and daughters that have made it big on a national stage. If we were to pay those fees, it would take money away from some of our other programs and grant programs, and we didn’t think that was a very prudent decision. So we though it would be in our best interest to stay away from the Buddy Holly name completely.”

Will Buddy Holly Disappear From Other Places?

Does this mean other companies or entities using the Buddy Holly name will have to drop it? For example the Chamber of Commerce Giant Side campaign makes reference to Buddy Holly. Burns says, “I think that’s unfortunate that it would occur. I hope it wouldn’t but judging by our experience I would say it probably could.”

Could this be the end of the Buddy Holly Center? Will the Buddy Holly Statue at 8th and Q have to come down? Could Lubbock drop Buddy Holly Avenue and rename it Avenue H like it used to be in the past? Burns says, “Well, I’m not real sure. Again that would be speculation and I kind of would prefer to stay away from that. But it makes you wonder when you start with programs like ours that don’t make any money how far they’re willing to go or what their trying to achieve.”

Burns says Civic Lubbock simply did not want to spend the money to hire a lawyer and go to court. So that’s the end of it. No more Buddy Holly Walk of Fame.

Maria Elena Holly Statement

Maria Elena Holly released a brief written statement yesterday. She says, “I have always supported the city of Lubbock’s efforts to honor my husband. The current misunderstanding evolves from the failure of certain entities associated with the city in using my husband’s name without first consulting me. I have tried very hard to protect my husband's name, image, and reputation over the past 47 years and I will continue to do so.”

Here at News Radio 1420 we would respectfully point out that back in September 1995 she was invited in writing to come to the dedication of the Buddy Holly walk of fame and in fact attended. The idea that she has not been consulted or that she just now found out that there is a Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in Lubbock is simply not true.

Peggy Sue Speaks Out

News Radio 1420 spoke to Peggy Sue Gerron moments after she heard about these new developments. Peggy Sue, by the way, was not Buddy Holly’s love interest. She was the girlfriend of drummer Jerry Allison. But she was close friends with Buddy Holly.

She says, “Well, y’know it’s a shame. That’s my first reaction to it. It’s just really a shame. Y’know it should be named Buddy Holly and anything else around here that wants to be named Buddy Holly should be allowed to.”

What Would Buddy Holly Say?

If Buddy Holly were alive today how would he react to these developments the last two days? Peggy Sue says, “First of all the West Texas Musicians is a very good idea because I think even Buddy would have wanted it named that for all the musicians not just one, not just for him or one particular person. Okay. I don’t see a whole lot wrong with West Texas Musicians. But I think it’s really bad. I think it’s really poor when we can’t honor a local son as Buddy Holly is and what he means to Lubbock.”

It Is Worth Fighting For

And Peggy Sue says Lubbock should not just drop the name Buddy Holly. She says it’s worth fighting for. “It’s hard to know but I don’t think it’s anything I would let loose easily for Lubbock. Because Lubbock needs all the marketing it can get for itself. Y’know we’re not very good and I say ‘we’ because I live here okay; we’re not very good about marketing Lubbock. And we could do better than what we do.”
